There is definitely something to say about the broom used in a punitive manner as well—practices like caning, whether for disciplining children or otherwise. Though very grim, I know reports of brooms being used in hate crimes (sodomizing, etc) do come up.
Perhaps you're already looking into this, but the history of brooms and witchcraft is a particularly rich and strange one.
